FULL MOON ECLIPSE OBSERVATION ORGANISED BY BALAI KHAZANAH ISLAM SULTAN HAJI HASSANAL BOLKIAH & ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY OF BRUNEI DARUSSALAM (PABD)

Published On : Sunday, 07 September 2025

The Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, in collaboration with the Astronomical Society of Brunei Darussalam (PABD), organised a Lunar Eclipse Observation Activity at the open area in front of the Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah building yesterday to witness the total lunar eclipse phenomenon that occurred early this morning.

The observation aimed to allow the public to appreciate one of the signs of Allah’s greatness while at the same time enhancing understanding of astronomical science (Ilmu Falak).

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth is positioned between the Sun and the Moon, causing the Earth to block the sunlight that would normally illuminate the Moon’s surface. As a result, the Earth’s shadow is cast upon the Moon.

According to astronomical data, the lunar eclipse began when the Moon entered the Earth’s penumbral shadow on Sunday, 7 September 2025, at around 11:28 p.m. (Brunei Time). It reached its maximum (total phase) at approximately 2:12 a.m. on Monday, 8 September 2025, and ended at 4:55 a.m., when the Moon exited the Earth’s penumbral shadow.

Throughout the country, mosques, suraus, and prayer halls also performed the Sunnah Prayer for the Lunar Eclipse (Solat Sunat Gerhana Bulan), with the main congregation held at Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque, Bandar Seri Begawan.

At the Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sunnah Prayer for the Lunar Eclipse was led by Yang Mulia Adee Aiman bin Haji Muhidin, Mosque Affairs Officer of Masjid Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit, Bebatik, Mukim Kilanas, who also delivered the khutbah (sermon).

In addition to the lunar observation, the event also featured various engaging activities such as a Kahoot quiz, picture-matching games, colouring activities, crossword puzzles, Islamic mathematics challenges, and booth sales, providing both educational and recreational experiences for visitors.
